Stockhorn Cable Car
Overview
Intro
The Stockhorn is the gateway to the Bernese Oberland. Its striking rock head can already be seen from the Aare valley. The cable car takes you up in two sections, over the Hinterstockensee directly to the mountain station at 2190 meters.
The Stockhorn cable car at a glance
The Stockhorn cable car connects Erlenbach in the Simmental in two sections with the Stockhorn summit at 2190 metres. First, modern panorama cabins take you to the Chrindi middle station, from where you continue in the well-known red gondola cabins over the Hinterstockensee to the summit. The lift is in operation all year round.
What to experience
Ride the gondola to the summit (20 minutes)
In modern panoramic cabins, you travel from Erlenbach to the intermediate station at Chrindi. There, you change to the iconic red gondolas. During the ride, an impressive panorama of the Bernese Alps unfolds before you. At the top, a 70-metre-long tunnel leads to the suspended viewing platform with a 240-degree view over the Swiss Plateau.
- Good to know: The summit gallery and platform are accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
- Tip: On clear days, you can see Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau to the south.
Hike the Stockhorn Panorama Trail (3–4 hours)
From the mountain station, the Panorama Trail leads across the Stockenfeld to Oberstockenalp, accompanied by views of more than 200 mountain peaks from Titlis to Moléson. Chamois can often be spotted on the rock faces, while information points along the “Habitats at Stockhorn” discovery trail explain the local alpine flora and fauna.
- Good to know: Information material for the discovery trail is available free of charge at the valley station.
“No Limits” – Lakeside trail for everyone (40 minutes)
Starting at the Chrindi intermediate station, this circular trail leads around Lake Hinterstocken, crossing a bridge and passing through two tunnels. The path was built so that people with reduced mobility can also enjoy the mountain. All-terrain electric wheelchairs are available for hire at the intermediate station.
- Good to know: The “No Limits” circular trail is closed in winter.
- Tip: Combine the lakeside trail with the Quiz Trail – the brochure is available at the valley station.
