Château de Gruyères
Overview
Intro
Dating back to the 13th century, the castle is now a museum covering eight centuries of regional architecture, history and culture, and sits amidst a wonderfully scenic panorama. The Gruyères region is also steeped in legends: You’ll soon be familiar with La Belle Luce, John the Cripple, the jester Chalamala and the heroic women of Gruyères who used their goats as weapons.
The Castle of Gruyères has been standing proudly atop a verdant hill at the foot of the impressive Fribourg Pre-Alps since the 13th century.
These days, the mediaeval fortress houses prestigious collections that bear witness to its long and eventful history. Visitors to the castle will embark on a journey through the ages and discover its many amazing treasures: the precious mediaeval stained glass and the capes of the knights; the wall hangings, which the bailiffs commissioned under the Ancien Régime; and the decoration of the Knight’s Room, which was created in the 19th century by a colony of passionate artists.
Temporary exhibitions complement the historical and artistic heritage, revealing a new side to the castle with every visit.
