Mellingen
Intro
At the centre of Mellingen is a medieval old town, laid out like an isosceles triangle along the left bank of the River Reuss and split in the middle by a short main alleyway. The town walls were demolished in the 18th century.
The former village initially belonged to the Counts of Lenzburg before being inherited by the Kyburg family, who officially founded the town on the left bank of the Reuss around 1230 and constructed a circular wall around it. There has been a bridge over the river since at least 1253. The Habsburgs, who became sovereigns of the land in 1273, granted Mellingen its town charter in 1296.
Today, many visitors flock to Mellingen on a daily basis to while away the hours browsing through its various shops, boutiques, restaurants and bars. A planned bypass is designed to reduce traffic and further boost the appeal of the old town.
