Mellingen at a glance
This is Mellingen
Mellingen is a charming town in the Reuss Valley in Aargau with a well-preserved medieval old town. It is located in the canton Aargau, about 20 kilometres northwest of Zurich, between Baden and Bremgarten.
Discover Mellingen
A walk through the old town will take you to the most striking landmarks of the town. The most striking is the time tower with the Lenzburgertor: Since 1544, the astronomical clock in the tower has not only shown the hours and minutes, but also the signs of the zodiac, days of the week and the phase of the moon. It is one of the rare historical astronomical clocks in Switzerland. Along the main street, you will also discover remains of the medieval city wall, the witches' tower and the city barn with integrated museum. Thematic city tours deepen the history of Mellingen.
Reuss and nature
The Reuss is the natural heart of Mellingen. The historic large bridge leads directly into the old town. The Ibergwiese is located on the river: A lakeside park with a playground, shady Murten lime tree and striking bronze statues by the artist Freddy Air Röthlisberger. In summer, a refreshment bar provides catering. The Reuss riverside hiking trail from Bremgarten is one of the most beautiful river sections on the Swiss Plateau. With a bit of luck, beavers or kingfishers can be observed; in addition, floodplain forests characterise the river landscape.
Around Mellingen
From Mellingen, the entire Reuss region can be explored. The rubber dinghy takes you downstream from Bremgarten to Mellingen or on to Gebenstorf. The neighbouring town of Baden with its Roman thermal baths and the FORTYSEVEN wellness spa is only a few kilometres away. Bremgarten, also a medieval town, is located directly on the Reuss riverside hiking trail. In the Aargau Jura Park, about 20 to 30 minutes away by car, there are numerous hiking and cycling routes.
