Five women raise their arms to their heads in different ways and welcome the day in a kind of ritual dance. What is characteristic of the symbolist Hodler are his monumental figures whose symmetrical positioning is supposed to reflect the order of nature. The “Day” painting was created for the world exhibition in Paris and is the counter piece to the “Night” painting that Hodler created ten years earlier, which can also be found at the Kunstmuseum Bern.
