Or how about a bike ride through the forest of Vuachère before enjoying an aperitif in the trendy Flon district? All this is possible in Lausanne.

Lausanne

Lausanne is situated in a very picturesque location: the city is built on three hills, surrounded by vineyards, with Lake Geneva at its feet. This is a place where city life meets unspoilt nature. The old town is dominated by the cathedral, considered to be the most impressive early Gothic building in Switzerland. The medieval centre features narrow streets lined with cafés and boutiques.

The best highlight of Lausanne is without a doubt its spectacular position by Lake Geneva with the wonderful mountain panorama. The Ouchy district is equally popular among both locals and visitors alike. Whether it’s a walk along the flower-lined waterfront promenade, a get-together as the sun goes down, or stand-up paddling on the lake – Ouchy has something for everyone. In summer, the Place du Vieux-Port and the Quais d’Ouchy are the perfect places to soak up the sun and enjoy some peace and quiet. The lakeside promenade extends from the artificial ruins known as Haldimand Tower, past the Château d’Ouchy – now a luxury hotel – as well as the pier and the port of Ouchy, all the way to the Bellerive swimming pool. The path takes you past three different parks where you can stop and take a break.

At Palud Square, in the heart of the pedestrian zone in the old town, you will find the oldest fountain in the city. Right next door is the 17th-century town hall with its large roof in typical Vaud style, its arcades and its Renaissance façade. The clock opposite the fountain is also well worth a visit, and reports on the most important hours in the history of Vaud. From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., figures make an appearance every hour on the hour. Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, a farmer’s market is held in the square, and it is well worth spending some time exploring it. You can amble through the market, try regional specialities and experience the lively hustle and bustle of the old town.

You can also make a quick stop in the old town on your bike tour.

Lausanne Cathedral

Right next to the Palud Square, in the heart of the city, you’ll find the Cathedral of Lausanne. This imposing building is considered to be one of the most beautiful Gothic monuments in Europe. The view from the cathedral esplanade is truly breathtaking and extends across the whole city and Lake Geneva, with a stunning mountain panorama in the background.

Recreation seekers can cycle, walk or jog along this route. And for those who would rather take on more of a physical challenge, the route can be taken in the other direction, starting from the lake and climbing uphill.
