Orbe Gorge
Overview
Intro
The little stream is quiet and dreamy as it lazily meanders through Vallorbe, but it soon becomes a roaring torrent as it rushes through the huge Orbe Gorge, where waterfalls alternate with spectacular rapids. A hike through the cool gorge is especially good on hot summer days. The river near the Saut du Day waterfall is the perfect spot to cool your feet.
Flowing from the direction of Vallorbe, the Orbe River has carved its own path through the terrain, creating a wild, narrow gorge with thundering waterfalls.
Hikes through the oasis that is the Jura
A 17-kilometre hiking trail starts at the Vallorbe winding through the gorge up to Orbe. Some places pass right along the edge of the water, then back up to the steep cliffs. The trail crosses the Vallorbe viaduct, passing the majestic Saut du Day waterfall and the dams of the hydropower plant and ending after 4.5 hours in the town of Orbe. The Saut du Day waterfall is the most spectacular point along the way: The waters of the Orbe River froth and foam as they plunge down several steps into a pool that is perfect for a refreshing dip. A true oasis!
The pristine landscape has been a designated nature reserve since 1970. The vivid green water, moss-covered stones and the landscape that alternates between dramatic, and subdued elevate this tour to something truly special. And with a bit of luck you may spot kingfishers, great egrets, chamois and even beavers near the river.
Tip: Picnic with locally brewed beer
The banks of the Orbe near the Saut du Day waterfall provide a cosy hideaway just right for a picnic. Be sure to sample an organic beer from the traditional craft brewery Brasserie La Concorde in Le Day. If you'd like to know more about the brewery, you can book a tour with beer tasting.
Getting there: parking in Vallorbe and Orbe. There are bus and train connections between the two towns.
