Intro
A gentle walk through times gone by: from the small Habsburg town of Mellingen to a similar little gem. The old town of Bremgarten. The meandering Reuss is the walker's constant companion, fringing the trail with idyllic water meadows.
Description
With just a handful of mediaeval lanes, Mellingen is one of the smallest of the 12 historic old towns in the Aargau region. Founded around 1230, the little town was granted its town charter in 1296 by the House of Habsburg.
Along the right bank of the Reuss, alternating between cooling forest shade and across sunny fields, the path reaches the bridge to the tranquil Gnadenthal Monastery with animal enclosures, gardens and restaurants where you can relax a while.
Walking through the unique, meandering natural river landscape, there's an impressive variety of diverse species of flora and fauna which have established a habitat in the water meadows.
Originally built by the Habsburgs according to a predefined settlement plan, Bremgarten was granted its town charter around 1240. The market scene began shortly afterwards, a tradition which still lives on today.
Tip:
Start the hike in Bremgarten and pick up a free voucher worth CHF 5.00 from the Bremgarten tourist information centre. This voucher can be redeemed at Restaurant Gnadenthal when you spend at least CHF 15.00.
Starting the hike at this location also allows you to walk along the left bank of the river through the riverbank protection area. This route takes you through the district of Hegnau with its unique landscape of ponds and rich diversity of fauna and flora. Hikers can return to the other side of the river Reuss by taking the ferry or following an unsignposted path to the Gnadenthal.
