Alpine Panorama Trail
Overview
Intro
The hallmarks of Les Pléiades are a white carpet of narcissi in May and fantastic, all-year-round views of Lac Léman and the surrounding Alps. The steep ascent to Blonay can be eased by taking the cogwheel railway.
Description
In Vevey, directly on Lake Geneva, the views of the French Alps are phenomenal. The town is known for its extraordinarily mild climate, its vineyards and its direct access to the lake. You could also take a boat trip on an old paddle steamer in Vevey.
This section of the hike does not start in the centre of town. Instead, it begins at the cogwheel railway station in Corseaux and quickly takes you into the vineyards. The hiking trail is located slightly above Corseaux. Passing through a number of different wine-growing regions, you soon get to Saint-Saphorin, a charming wine-producing village nestled into the vineyards of Lavaux. The history of the village goes back to 47 A.D. and the parish originates from the 6th century.
Continuing along the vineyards, you walk through Rivaz and then find yourself on the famous terraces of Lavaux, one of Switzerland’s large wine-growing areas. The names of the villages read like a catalogue of famous Swiss white wines. The first terraces were created by monks in the 12th century. In 2007 the region became a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. The grapes benefit from the sunshine reflected by the water and from the heat stored in the dry-stone walls. In Rivaz, slightly above the lakeshore, you have an opportunity to taste the wines of the region in the Lavaux Vinorama.
Further along the vineyards you get to Epesses, where you descend to the lake and follow the shore to Cully. After a total hiking time of about three hours, the lovely village with the beautiful lakeside is a perfect place to rest your feet.
Continue to Villette and Lutry before you begin the last hour of walking, which will take you to Lausanne. In Lutry you leave the vineyards and hike along the lake all the way to Lausanne Ouchy. There are magnificent gardens to see on the lakeshore such as Denantou, Elysée and Olympic Park.
