Alter Zügenweg
Overview
Intro
Stunning rocky landscapes, wonderful forests, a clear blue mountain stream and perfect photographic opportunities: the hike along the old Zügenweg offers a wealth of diversity - for families, nature lovers and hikers.
Description
From Davos Glaris, the path climbs slightly and leads along the hill on the right side of the valley towards the Zügen Gorge. Initially on a forest road, the trail soon becomes narrower and plunges into the woods.
The middle section through the woods to the Steigwald via Höheggen, offers a varied view of the surrounding mountains and down into the impressive Zügen Gorge. The three-kilometre-long gorge between Davos Wiesen and Monstein was formed over centuries by the Landwasser River, which created a striking rocky landscape. Early on, the trail through the inaccessible gorge became an important trade connection for the people of Davos. In the years 1477–1848, what was produced from the Davos silver mine was transported via the old train route. Construction began on the old Zügenstrasse in 1870. This is still considered a work of art in road construction today.
On the opposite side of the slope, you can explore the village of Monstein, a picturesque Walser village in a sunny location, which is home to the highest beer brewery in Europe. Although the Zügenweg points towards the opposite slope from time to time, no noise can be heard from the main road.
The hiking trail winds through the forest and across the many steep ravines down to the sun-drenched terraced village of Davos Wiesen. A little later, you reach the small train station, from where you can take the Rhaetian Railway quickly and conveniently back to Davos. It is worth taking a short detour to the Wiesner Viaduct, the second highest bridge in the Rhaetian Railway network. This offers another perspective on the Zügen Gorge.
