Description
There are several interesting buildings you can visit in Überlingen, including the St. Nikolaus Cathedral. The five-aisled basilica was built between the 14th and 16th centuries. It is the largest late Gothic church on Lake Constance. Next to it in the market square, ducks swim in the Suso fountain. The fountain’s name comes from mystic and poet Heinrich Seuse, known as Suso, who wrote the “Little book of eternal wisdom”. Wednesdays and Saturdays are busy, as the weekly markets take place in the old town. This stage passes the Ostbad lido and the harbour, to the magnificent 18th century baroque pilgrimage church in Birnau. The view from the church across orchards and vineyards to Lake Constance is stunning.
You continue on past lidos and campsites and the “Haus am See” (house on the lake). This isn’t just any house, but the one in Unteruhldingen, where you can see 3000 years of world cultural heritage. Since 1922, the sunken world has been presented in various reconstructions at the pile dwelling museum. In the summer and on fine weekends, Lake Constance is a tourist hotspot. There’s a beach life-feel on the stretch between Unteruhldingen and Meersburg. For those who find it too crowded and too much, why not try a wine tasting in Meersburg? There are a number of options. The small town is one of the most visited in southern Germany and is a real feast for the eyes.
Another ferry has now arrived, and visitors are streaming towards Germany’s oldest still-inhabited castle. Remarkably, the more than 1000-year-old Meersburg Castle has never been destroyed. Its most famous resident was German writer Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. She lived at the castle for three periods between 1841 and her death in May 1848. The route is flanked on the left by hillside vineyards and the on right by the big lake. There are also wine shops and winegrowers cooperatives in Hagnau.
Goodbye Kirchberg Castle, hello angular Hersberg Castle at Immenstaad. Alongside the lake and pile dwellings, the numerous fortresses and castles clearly dominate this stage. The castle church at Friedrichshafen is imposing. The town’s landmark twin church towers are 55 metres tall. The same building is also home to the “Weingut Herzog von Württemberg” vineyard, which has been making wine since as far back as the 13th century. The Zeppelin fountain is reminiscent of Geneva’s Jet d’Eau. It’s not far to the Zeppelin Museum either, which is right on the harbour.
