Intro
You leave Rorschach behind in the parklands between the railway line and shore. Around Arbon, with its charming half-timbered houses, castle, and St. Martin’s Church, you follow the lakeside road again. Romanshorn is the most important Swiss port on Lake Constance. You explore “Mostindien” through fishing and farming villages. The stage ends in Kreuzlingen, the largest Swiss town on Lake Constance, via Münsterlingen.
Description
Rorschach lies at the southernmost point of Lake Constance. If you look through the “Grand Tour photo spot” at the Rorschach bathing hut, the bathing hut itself is no longer there. The wooden structure was destroyed by a fire shortly before Christmas 2024. It was exactly 100 years old. However, a new hut should be built (as of 2025). This stage passes by the Horn port facility, then zig zags past the “Wäschhüsli” (wash house), which dates back to 1669. A lot of streams flow into Lake Constance. In the Stachen district of Arbon, it’s the Aach, where ducklings swim happily between the river and the lake.
Lake Constance welcomes feathered guests as well as bikes – for example, in the waterbird and migratory bird reserve, which is of national importance, and where the “gravel island” is located. You can see cormorants, grey herons and black-headed gulls here all year round. By contrast, common gulls, yellow-legged gulls and Caspian gulls are among the winter guests. You can explore the medieval old town in Arbon. The castle complex, as it appears today, was elegantly expanded between 1510 and 1518 by Bishop Hugo von Hohenlandenberg. The Saurer Museum is located directly by the lake on the cycle route. Fans of historic vehicles and embroidery and weaving machines will be in their element here.
Reeds and riparian woodland adorn the Seemoosriet nature reserve. The ride between fruit orchards, railway tracks and the lake is leisurely. Luxburg Castle in Egnach is a little hidden away. It’s located right next to the Wiilerbach stream, shortly before this flows into the lake. Romanshorn lies further above the Salmsacher Aach stream. Interestingly, the port and station are located right next to each other. A tour of the port gives you the opportunity to find out more about history, the town and Lake Constance. The onward journey along the lake promenade is also enjoyable. The jetty at Uttwill is remarkably long, while the Seebeerenweg trail in Kesswil is interesting.
The scenery in Altnau is dotted with campsites. Münsterlingen Convent was once an Augustinian chapter of nuns; later, from the 16th century, it was a Benedictine convent. Today, the impressive building is used by Thurgau mental health services. You can take a dip at Hörnli lido, and Kreuzlingen youth hostel is located in the grand Villa Hörnliberg. You need to keep your eyes peeled so that you don’t miss Seeburg Castle in the magnificent park on this stage. It seems to be trying to hide behind huge old deciduous trees. The port is busy. It’s no wonder, as a playground, restaurants, a mini golf course, herbaceous borders, the Alti Badi restaurant and the Bodensee Arena are all quite close together. They’re all worth seeing and visiting before you continue your journey.
