Intro

A stroll through the picturesque old town of Estavayer-le-Lac, with its cobbled lanes and mighty castle is well worthwhile. Children love the fine sandy beaches, the easy rambles through lakeshore reed beds and the numerous aquatic animals.

Description

Estavayer-le-Lac is a small medieval town in the canton of Fribourg. Located on the southwestern shore of Lake Neuchâtel, it is a delight for water sports enthusiasts, tourists and nature lovers alike. With two beaches, a harbour, the attractive old town, Chenaux Castle, several museums and the Grande Cariçaie nature reserve, there is plenty to discover here.

You walk through the narrow streets of the old town below Chenaux Castle to the Grèves de la Corbière Nature Reserve. It is one of eight nature reserves in the Grande Cariçaie, the largest lakeside wetland in Switzerland. It consists mainly of woods and is the location for a rare and important habitat in the floodplain pine forest. A gravel path that is mostly fairly wide runs through the nature reserve and you reach Chevroux in just over an hour and a half.

An attractively landscaped path across a footbridge takes you on towards Portalban. You walk past old lakeside settlements. There are organic remains of pile dwellings, floors and wooden vessels, built during periods of relative drought. As the level of the lake rose, the villages were abandoned. In the neighbouring village of Portalban, there is a reconstructed pile-dwelling village. It is based on the life of the people who settled on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel almost 6,000 years ago.

Then, less than three hours later, you reach the attractive fishing and farming village of Portalban. It has its own boat harbour, many weekend cottages, a campsite and a beach that is popular with surfers and kiters.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
