Intro
The relatively flat route first leads along the French-Swiss border through the forests of the Ajoie region. Again and again, the view opens up to the surrounding hills all the way to the Vosges Mountains. The old town of Porrentruy and its castle are well worth a visit.
Description
The hike to Porrentruy begins in Lucelle at the end of a narrow valley on the French border. The Cistercian monastery founded here saw wars, plagues, fires and earthquakes over seven centuries. Its history ended in 1792 with the French Revolution. Monks created the Etang de Lucelle as early as the 12th century. Today, a wheelchair-accessible path leads around the pond. An educational trail provides explanations about the nature reserve.
A scenic path leads through the forest along the border between France and Switzerland. A varied, delightful ridge walk with views into neighbouring Alsace continues across meadows, through forests and up to the Roc au Corbeau. Wooden steps and benches inviting you to rest and enjoy sweeping views make the hike easier.
A forest path now leads away from the border down to the small village of Miécourt. It lies in the plain straddling the canalised Allaine to the southwest of Mont de Miserez. Fields, pastures and wooded sections alternate until Vendlincourt is in sight. South of the village, the route continues along the hillside. The rest of the way to Porrentruy leads mainly through the forest. Dozens of large wooden carvings adorn the path on the "Sentier Botanique".
Across fields and past horse pastures, you finally reach Porrentruy, the capital of the Ajoie region. The quirky town of 7,000 inhabitants has plenty of charm. Baroque noble palaces, antiquated-looking shop signs, the medieval castle and traces of dinosaurs bear witness to the town's rich history.
