Intro
Enjoyable ascent on unsurfaced and surfaced paths to Châlet du Régiment. The landscape is dominated by the jagged Gastlosen chain; colourful flower meadows and lovely views back to the Euschelspass and to the surrounding mountains are a constant surprise.
Description
The municipality of Jaun is in the upper Jauntal valley, with the imposing limestone Gastlosen mountain range towering above. This route doesn’t lead past the impressive waterfall but, as this leg only takes under three hours, it’s worth taking a detour. At 12 metres high, an average of 728 litres of water falls through it per second, potentially rising to 6,000 litres per second. Yet more interesting, however, are the headwaters it originates from. The water comes from the slopes of the Vanil Noir mountain, the highest peak in the canton of Fribourg. It then flows on through the Vallée du Gros Mont side valley, located 15 kilometres away, in the form of a little stream and completely vanishes underground along the way, before resurfacing at Jaun. This fact was only discovered in 1928 by dyeing the water at its source, then watching it make a surprising reappearance as a waterfall 11 days later.
Then comes a wonderful path through the woods. At Schattenhalb, you will catch your first glimpse of the imposing jagged edge of the Gastlosen. A bit further on, the Buvette des Sattels restaurant is the perfect place to take a rest. Keep going until you reach the Mittler Sattel car park, which is also used for the Gastlosen (Route 262) circular hike. From there, head along a gravel road to Ober Sattel.
This leg ends a little further on at Chalet du Soldat, where you can also spend the night. Not only does this spot boast wonderful views of the limestone rock faces of the Gastlosen, the Vanil Noir, Dent du Brenleire and Cheval Blanc are also visible in the distance. Make sure to catch these over an evening meal with a sunset.
