Intro
More than 150 million years ago Switzerland was located on the sea. Fossilized dinosaur footprints are all that’s left. This is what you see on the Jurassic Bike tour, but the landscape of this scarcely known part of the Jura region is just as impressive.
Description
From the centre of Porrentruy you follow the signs of the mountain bike route, pass the town of Courtedoux and the motorway. Right after the underpass you find yourself in a kind of Jurassic Park. As many as 14,000 fossilized dinosaur footprints were found here, because this was the shore of the Jurassic sea around 150 million years ago and the footprints are what’s left of the dinosaurs strolling along the beach.
On the mountain bike route you continue to Chevenez and the Vacherie Roche-d’Or and on to Col de Montvoie. You are now on the last ridge of the Jura mountains before the Vosges begin a little further north. From Col de Montvoie the official route runs downhill on forest roads to Fontenais, a suburb of Porrentruy.
It is good idea to add another loop from Col de Montvoie to St-Ursanne on the Doubs river. To do so, you continue on the forest roads, which are not specifically marked as a mountain bike tour, down to Ocourt and follow the southern bank of the Doubs to St-Ursanne. The village with its medieval houses is considered to be the most picturesque place in the Jura region. On the small road across the Col de la Croix and on gravel roads past the Vacherie Mouillard mountain farm, you then return to the sign-posted Jurassic route.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
