Klettgau-Rhein-Weg
Overview
Intro
In the Blauburgunderland at Hallau, the high-level trail leads over the three-armed Randen hill chain, through extensive forests, along the Swiss-German border. Wonderful views from Randen tower into the neighbouring country and from Randenhaus to the Alps.
Description
North of the Rhine is the well-kept Schaffhausen wine-growing village of Hallau, nestling in extensive vineyards, farmland and forests. The hike has barely begun when you are already amid the vineyards, and therefore at the heart of Schaffhausen’s Pinot Noir region. The mountain church of St. Moritz towers over the vines; it is both eye-catching and a landmark. You continue on this kind of terrain for almost an hour. Not surprising, because this is the largest borderland vineyard landscape in German-speaking Switzerland. Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and other grapes grow in the fertile soils.
Half an hour later comes the border with Germany, and it takes about 45 minutes to walk along here to just before Stühlingen. Crossing the Schlaatemerbach stream, you climb up to the next vines and go through Schleitheim. Walking across wide fields, you reach the first range of hills in the Randen. The natural and cultural landscape in the Schaffhausen Regional Nature Park is unique: the Randen hills, the Rhine, the vineyards around Klettgau, the forests, typical villages and the huge agricultural areas give the area its diversity.
You then encounter the ruins of Randenburg Castle and the Schleitheimer Randenturm tower as you go uphill through the forest. The original wooden tower was built in 1872 and replaced with an iron one in 1909. During the Second World War, it served as an observation post for anti-aircraft troops. Today it offers a fantastic view across Switzerland and neighbouring Germany. The ruins consist of just a few tiny remains of two walls. Almost an hour later, you reach the end of this stage at the Randenhaus. The venue, located on the high plateau of the Table Jura, is a popular excursion destination near Schaffhausen.
