Description
This physically demanding hike to Arosa starts in the centre of the Lenzerheide resort village. Right from the outset, a steep path leads from Crapera through the wood to a barbecue area. A fantastic view of the high valley and the surrounding mountains will come into sight. From this point, you can also make a detour to the waterfall. However, the climb there requires you to divert from the official hiking route and walk along a narrow, unsecured path. The waterfall will be above you and looks as if it’s gushing straight out of the rock face.
Back on the signposted route, the next ascent is to Alp Sanaspans. In this section, you will also enter the territory of Parc Ela, the biggest regional nature park in Switzerland. Although the park’s area only accounts for around 1% of Switzerland, one third of all Switzerland’s species of insect live here. After around two hours of walking, you will find a scenic spot to take a rest.
Further on, you will hike uphill through the gloriously tranquil and wild Sanaspans side valley. From here you will start the final two hours or so of climbing to the Parpaner Rothorn. During this stretch, you will pass through the last few patches of greenery until you reach the idyllic little lake of Lai Plang and find yourself beneath Arosa’s Rothorn peak. From then on, the terrain becomes rockier and more demanding. At 2,860 metres above sea level, you will reach the highest point of this route. From this point, you can enjoy views of over 1,000 mountain peaks.
After resting at the summit, you can continue with replenished energy. Perhaps you could say cosmic energy, as you will now be walking through a kind of lunar landscape. The rust-red colour of the iron-rich rock is a dominant feature until you reach Gredigs Fürggli. Further down, it becomes interspersed with the green of the meadows. The small, blue Alpine lake strikes a lovely contrast.
Further on, you will descend through a gorgeous landscape towards the Schwellisee lake, which is fed by the young river Plessur. Between the two lakes, there was once an extensive Swiss stone pine forest, which was cleared by the Walser people. Now comes the last hour of the hike, leading past Innerarosa to Arosa, where this eight-hour-or-so route comes to an end by yet another beautiful lake, the Obersee.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
