Niederurnertäli Trail
Overview
Intro
This snowshoe tour is made to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Niederurnertäli valley in winter. The snow-covered Alpine meadows, gnarled maple trees and stunning views of the Glarus region in this glacier valley are very appealing.
Description
With the gondola you travel in just a few minutes from Niederurnen to Morgenholz. Once there, you immediately feel the peacefulness of the lovely glacier valley. The Niederurnertäli valley is nestled between the Wageten, Brüggler and Chöpfenberg mountains in the south and the impressive Hirzli mountain chain in the north. This is where the powerful Linth glacier and the smaller Niederurner Valley glacier met about 12,000 years ago. They formed a steep wall, approximately 550 m high, between Niederurnen and Morgenholz. Today, the gondola offers an easy way to get over it. Until 1965 the Niederurnertäli valley was accessible only on foot and thus its original character was preserved.
The trail begins near the Morgenholz mountain station and leads across fields dotted with maple trees in the direction of Bodenberg. Near the Hirzel mountain restaurant you cross the village stream. Now it’s time to gain some altitude. A steep ascent to Planggböden follows, passing some scattered huts. The climb is worth the effort. From time to time you come across the delicate wooden sculptures created by artist Thomas Jud. At the foot of Planggenstock you have an amazing view of the mountains of Glarus. Deep down below you see Lake Walen twinkling with the impressive chain of the seven Churfirsten mountains above.
The descent in the direction of Mättmenriet passes the beautifully situated Mettmen block house. The self-catering hut with its comfortable picnic area is a good spot to take a break. A loop follows to get past the open forest clearing and finally you reach the groomed winter hiking trail, which takes you to the Hirzli mountain restaurant. Follow the village stream and shortly thereafter you are in Morgenholz.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
