Siebenbrunnen-Weg
Overview
Intro
The hike from Iffigenfälle via the Oberlaubhorn to the Simmenfällen (waterfalls) is one of the most popular in the Lenk area. It offers breathtaking views over Lenk village and to the surrounding mountain world and leads past the most spectacular cascades in the Simmental.
Description
The hike starts with an ascent in the forest and continues along the Simmen falls to the first highlight: the Barbara bridge. From here, the stormy Simmen falls can not only be seen and heard, but also felt on one's own body in the form of water splashes. Here, masses of water cascade over the rocks and envelop the surroundings in mist. The bridge or dam in front of the waterfall serves as a barrier to divert the rising Simme. This measure was taken as early as the late 18th century to protect the valley from flooding. Barbara was the name of the wife of the Kurhaus director at the time, who made it possible to open up the Simmen falls and the barrage to tourists.
The route then winds its way up through the forest. Deep gorges can be observed, chiselled into the rock by the Simme. Before reaching Alp Rezlibergli, the terrain becomes somewhat more level, but the hike is all the more exhilarating as you detour to the seven springs of the Simme. At the foot of a mighty limestone wall, the Simme foams to the surface. In summer, up to 2800 litres per second flow from the seven springs. This fascinating natural spectacle and the surrounding mountain meadows with fireplaces invite you to linger.
The second ascent is another strenuous one. The highest point of the hike is reached at the historic Langermatte, where, according to legend, the "women’s battle" was once fought. Today you’ll find an alpine cheese dairy here; another follows on Alp Ritz. From Langermatte via alpine pastures, Iffigenalp is reached all too quickly. At the end of the hike, a sun terrace awaits you in the stately Berghaus. Tip: On your return to the village of Lenk, you pass the Iffig waterfall. Whether on foot or by bus, be sure to take a look at the fall, where masses of water plunge around 120 metres over the rocks.
