Description
The last leg of the Rheintaler Höhenweg route sets off from the Berghaus Malbun hotel restaurant with its magnificent views. It’s easy to get there by bus – or, of course, via stage 86.5 from Wildhaus. The first section leading downhill to Galggen is steep but boasts beautiful views over the Rhine Valley and the mountain peaks of Kuegrat, Alpspitz and as far as the Hoher Freschen in Austria.
At the Kaiseriloch, the deciduous trees are hiding a little blue reservoir. The gravel road will give way to a surfaced road for around 45 minutes. The Berggasthaus Aufstieg restaurant is the perfect spot to stop for a drink. Once refreshed, it’s time for the final climb up to the Trübbach stream, passing by several little settlements and farmsteads along the way. At Rütili, a beautiful waterfall gushes into the valley and, once you reach Maienberg, you will be greeted by views towards Chur. Continuing through the valley, you will hike a short way through the woods until you reach Sargans Castle. The Counts of Montfort-Werdenberg-Sargans built the castle in 1260 and ruled over a territory stretching at times from Lake Constance to San Bernardino.
Sargans and Mels have a tradition of winemaking. After the castle, you will pass by a vineyard. It’s possible that grapes were first planted in Sarganserland by the Romans. A short while later, this final leg and thus the Rheintaler Höhenweg as a whole comes to an end at Sargans railway station.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
