Trail Run Flims
Overview
Intro
This loop through Ruinaulta (Rhine Gorge) and past Lake Cauma is an easy introduction to trail running, or a quick way to rack up kilometres. The route mainly comprises wide trails and dirt roads with easy footing.
Description
Located between Chur and Disentis, Flims in Graubünden is a relaxing holiday destination for hiking and swimming. It’s also great for running year-round, as it’s below 1,200m. The run begins through forests and pastures, dropping down to the Vorderrhein, where it meets the tracks of the Rhaetian Railway.
The setting is unique, with the road winding alongside the unusual white limestone cliffs of Ruinaulta, where you can see the lasting impact of the Flims Rockslide. The rockslide, which happened 10,000 years ago, is the largest landslide to have occurred in the Alps.
As you run alongside river rafters and follow the bend in the railroad tracks, you quickly arrive at Chrummwag at the base of the Ruinaulta cliffs to begin the short climb. A minor detour to the Il Spir viewing platform gives you a bird’s eye view of the route you’ve already covered. The next stop is Lake Cauma, where you can find out why it’s often referred to as “Lake Siesta” before finishing the loop.
Tip from ALPSinsight: This is the perfect route for people who want to transition from road running to trail running.
