Intro

Giornico, the «gateway to the Leventina» is crammed with historic monuments. From here it's uphill on one of the oldest approaches to the Leventina valley via Faidàl and Personico. The Alp Transit visitor centre is located in nearby Pollegio.

Description

At the bottom of the valley of Media Leventina, on the northern end of the Biaschina gorge, is the village of Lavorgo. In terms of topography, the Leventina is divided into three areas: The Piottino gorge separates the northern Alta Leventina from Media Leventina in the middle. The latter, in turn, is separated by the Biaschina gorge from Bassa Leventina in the south. Across the Ticino river and past Nivo, the village of Chironico is reached after about an hour. It is one of the largest bouldering areas (climbing without a rope on boulders) in Switzerland and comprises 37 different sectors and over 2,000 alternate routes.

After another hour you come to the village of Giornico. It was built on an ancient earth deposit of the Vignoi and Saint Anna rivers. The results of the impact of a massive rockslide are visible north of Giornico in the Biaschina gorge. The village represents a connection between the plains of the Ticino region and the alpine landscape. Shaped by people and the natural environment, Giornico looks almost like a museum. Human creativity has clearly had an effect on the historic character of this area.

Now follows the sometimes steep, almost 2-hour ascent to Faidalo with beautiful paths, chestnut trees, and rustic cottages along the way. After crossing the stone bridge above Riale di Nèdro it takes an hour to get down to Personico. Following along the Ticino river, this section ends about another hour later in Biasca. A little above the village is the church of Saints Peter and Paul from the 11th century. It is of Roman origin and an historic monument of national importance. The interior comprises a number of frescoes and sculptures from centuries long ago. Behind the tracks of the train station you can see the waterfalls of Santa Petronilla. The source of the Ri della Froda mountain stream is located at the level below the Cima di Biasca peak at Alpe del Lago.
