Description
Chur is the oldest city in Switzerland and has a 5,000-year history of settlements. Its conveniently situated location has led to the lively episcopal city developing into the economic and cultural heart of Grisons. The first stage of the Via Sett starts at the train station. Going past the art museum, you walk through the attractive old town of Chur. It is worth making some short detours through the narrow streets, to the squares and sights of interest. These include the Cathedral of St. Mary, the city fortifications with their walls and towers and the old town hall.
After the old town, the trail follows the Plessur stream. 45 minutes later, it branches off to the right and climbs up to Passugg. There are a few houses and a company called Passugger located on a spur between the valley in Plessur and the ravine at Rabiusa. Since 1896, the business has been producing the well-known mineral water, which collects in underground slate caverns deep in the Rabiosa Gorge. In 1991, the firm added another mineral water called Allegra. It comes to the surface near the neighbouring village of Malix.
To arrive there, you continue hiking uphill: first on a zigzag path through an attractive forest near Riedwiesli. From Palfrei, you continue on a surfaced road amid pastures to the Strassberg castle ruins. Only the tower and parts of the great hall (manor house) remain of the complex.
An hour later, you are standing before the old façade of the abbey building. It is over 600 years old and is 100 metres away from the even older Church of St. Mary and Michael. You arrive in Churwalden shortly afterwards. After almost four hours of hiking and an elevation gain of nearly 1,000 metres, there are restaurants tempting you to enjoy refreshments before continuing upwards.
The next town is Parpan, and the municipality has also been part of Churwalden since 2010. It is followed by the last 50 metre elevation gain to Valbella. Shortly after this comes the final sprint around the Heidsee lake to the destination for the stage in Lenzerheide. The idyllic lake consists of a larger and a smaller lake, separated by a dam.
