WALSA-Weg
Overview
Intro
Through wild Alpine vegetation to Alp Gampidells, along steep slopes to Vermol with its chapel and on to Chapfensee lake in the midst of protected moorland. Later on, rugged, rocky Kleinberg, followed by fertile Flumserberg.
Description
The second leg of the Walsa route is reached via cable car from Wangs or, if you prefer the old-fashioned way, by foot following on from the first leg. This majority of this rather long walk, which takes over seven hours, follows a network of good-quality paths. Right from the outset, the magnificent views over the Sarganserland to the mountain peaks of the Churfirsten and Alvier ranges, and the Falknis and Gonzen are the star of the show. The path alternates between sections of gravel and surfaced road until you are somewhat above the river Seez, which is crossed by a path.
This is followed by a climb to Vermol. Around 300 metres of altitude are covered in a good hour. After a brief descent, you will be standing before the idyllic Chapfensee. The area around the lake is part of a landscape of verrucano roche moutonnée, stretching from the Melser Hinterberg to the Flumser Kleinberg. The island on Chapfensee is a sanctuary for various species of bird. High and transitional moors and spruce–fir forests are typical for this area. After crossing the first dam, you may want to take a rest in the fantastically beautiful landscape.
The lake behind you will soon change back into the impressive rocky backdrop over the Sarganserland on the horizon. With some gentle climbs and descents, the mountain trail leads to Sässliwiese. This is followed by the descent to Schils, where the final hour of walking begins: gently along the surfaced road and past the sunny slopes of the Flumserberg, bustling with agriculture and tourism. The destination for this leg, however, is not located in the village, but rather at Flumserberg Bergheim.
