Description
This leg gets off to a leisurely start at Murg pier: this is where the boat will pick you up for convenient transport to the village of Quinten across the lake. Just like Murg, this car-free area in the foothills of the Churfirsten mountain range is known for its humid and mild climate. As well as chestnut trees, lemons, figs and kiwis thrive here too.
The path is still fairly level and runs slightly above the shore of the lake until you reach Tscherüti. After that point, it is steep and sometimes exposed, but is well secured at all times. The first steep stage takes around an hour. Now there follows a section to savour: hiking through the Seerewald wood, 200 to 300 metres above the lake, until you reach Seeren. Shortly thereafter, you will be standing before the Rinquelle waterfall. It is around 45 metres high and is an overflow from a huge subterranean cave system. Especially when it rains or snow is melting, huge amounts of water come crashing down into the ravine here. A bit further up still are the Seerenbach Falls, where water gushes down the rock face from a height of 585 metres. The second of the three stages is 305 metres high, making it one of the highest waterfalls in Switzerland. However, you will only see the three cascades once you are out of the valley and wood and look back.
A few minutes later, you will reach the scattered settlements of Hinterbetlis and Vorderbetlis. It will now take around two hours to reach the second steep stage of around 300 metres of altitude to Gadmen. The path in the Betlisbergwald offers no shortage of gorgeous views along the way. Towards the end, you will walk for a while along the old dry stone walls. Your destination for this leg is Amden, a mystical spot said to have special powers. From the sunny ledge high over the Walen Lake, there are marvellous views over the shimmering, emerald green water and the mountain panorama in the distance behind it.
