Walserweg
Overview
Intro
Typical scattered settlement in the Safiental valley. «Bim Turra» (Safien Turrahus), a former transfer station on Safierberg over which the Walsers migrated in the 14th century. Traditional wooden buildings, shingle roofs, «Stegelzuun» (slanted fences) as well as Camaner huts: typical individual Alpine dairies.
Description
The Turrahus is the starting point for cross-country skiing routes, snowshoe hikes and ski tours in both summer and winter. A bit further south, just below the Alperschällihora, you can see the glacier stream's stunning waterfall cascade, which is suitable for ice climbing in winter.
From the mountain inn, you reach the stony riverbed of the Rabiusa via the main road, which the hike follows for just under a kilometre. You then get to the church of Thalkirch, first mentioned in 1441. Shortly before the church, you pass a typical "Stegelzuun" (slanted fence).
An enjoyable, varied trail leads uphill through the fabled Bawald forest and along the eastern slope. In the Bächer Tobel, you cross a narrow wooden footbridge over the mountain stream. The tree line is fast approaching. The views into the valley, over wooded hills and the barren, steep slopes of Bruschghorn, Piz Beverin, Heinzenberg and many others are fantastic.
A narrow path continues uphill across meadows and past mountain huts. The route reaches its highest point at the Camaner huts, 1,982 metres above sea level, before descending to Camanaboda, the highest settlement in the Safiental. Inhabited all year round, it's a fine example of Walser settlement culture. A visit to the local museum (with advance reservation) is worthwhile. With a bit of luck, you can make out the silhouettes of ibexes that live in the Beverin Nature Park on the opposite mountain peaks of Verdusa-, Bruschg- and Gelbhorn.
The route continues on asphalt downhill along the steep slope towards Safien-Platz, the only larger settlement in this beautiful valley.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
