Walserweg Gottardo

At the foot of Piz Muraun on the Lukmanierstrasse lies Curaglia, the largest village in the municipality of Medel. After starting at the church, the path climbs through a wild gorge with layered slate stones. The next part is steep and challenging, across a wooded ridge, past alps and above the treeline to Alp Soliva. This is the highest point of this stage. The Medelser glacier appears in the far south and the white Tödi massif greets you in the north. The mountain path now winds over the undulating high plateau which is covered with heather bushes and perennials. When going downwards, keep an eye on: Disentis with its imposing monastery building. According to old monastery chronicles, Walser abbots and monks also worked here.

Surrounded by overgrown boulders on the edge of the huge erosion slope of the Bova Gronda, the path flows into a dense mountain forest. A relaxing section follows before your full concentration is required again on the slippery path across two torrents. The lovely Lag da Laus suddenly appears in a hollow in the terrain, with its small benches and fireplaces. It is a good place to take a break, and it is a popular excursion destination too, as it can also be reached by car. After the alpine pastures, a final rough stretch leads through the forest to Alp Con. Visible from the narrow path: the impressive erosion slope on the opposite incline, and the imposing buildings of the former Tenigerbad, briefly appear at the back of the valley. Since 1580, it has had various uses, and all attempts to reopen it have failed. The spa and hotel complex are currently closed (as of 2023).

From Alp Con Sut the route follows the small road, which goes through the forest in long bends to reach the hamlet of Val. The only guest house in the small settlement is a cosy traditional Usteria (closed Mon/Tues) and this is also the destination for this stage.
