Zürichsee-Rundweg
Overview
Intro
From Küsnacht Tobel the way leads to the Schübelweiher pond and small Rumensee lake, where plenty of picturesque rest places are discovered. And what a surprising sight: the lower Werenbach Tobel is situated at the heart of Zurich, yet worlds away from all city hectic!
Description
Not long after the start of the tenth stage, you come upon the long, thin Schübelweiher pond, which was dug to provide water to the former cotton mill at the mouth of the Küsnacht ravine. It was also used to make ice in winter. The environmental upgrading work currently under way is helping to strike the perfect balance between conservation, urban drainage and leisure activities.
The stage also connects the two municipalities of Herrliberg and Küsnacht on the «Gold Coast», as the right shore of Lake Zurich is commonly known. The trail takes you from Witellikon to Rehalp through a long stretch of forest, following the Wehrenbach stream towards Zurich. En route, you pass Balgrist University Hospital, the Burgwies Tram Museum and a number of inviting spots to stop and catch your breath, before finally arriving at the perimeter walls of the Botanical Gardens.
In the final part of your descent, the Hornbach stream is squeezed into a narrow bed before finally flowing into the lake. Soon you reach the Chinese Garden between Bellerivestrasse and the Blatterwiese park near the Zürichhorn on the right shore of the lake. This temple garden was presented to the people of Zurich as a gift from the Chinese city of Kunming, with which it is twinned. It can be visited for free during opening hours.
On the lakeside promenade, the path leads you directly along the water over stones or, alternatively, along the Quaiweg up on the Quaimauer wall. Passing underneath maple trees nestled in parkland, the route then approaches the city proper. As you continue on past harbours and a bathing area, you will already be able to spot the striking Grossmünster church towers – a symbol of Zurich – from far off. When you cross the Quaibrücke bridge and reach the finish line, you will have made it all the way round Lake Zurich, including the Obersee or upper section.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
