The Tamina Gorge at a glance
The Tamina Gorge is located in the canton of St. Gallen near Bad Ragaz and was formed over around 15,000 years by the power of the Tamina River. The narrow crevice is 750 meters long and 70 meters deep. From the Old Bad Pfäfers, a secured path leads 450 metres into the interior of the rock to the spring water grotto.
What to experience
Hike through the gorge (1.5 hours)
From Bad Ragaz you hike 4 kilometres along a well-developed path along the Tamina to the Old Bad Pfäfers. On the way, the path leads through the Badtobel, past rock faces and 8 waterfalls. The trail is wide and suitable for families.
- Good to know: Access is car-free, arrival on foot or by bus from Bad Ragaz.
Discover the spring water grotto (45 minutes)
From the Old Bad Pfäfers, a paid, secured path leads 450 meters deep into the rock interior. You will pass a tunnel and a small thermal water fountain with 36.5 degrees warm water. At the end, the spring water grotto opens up, where around 8000 litres of thermal water per minute spring up from the rock.
- Good to know: Wear sturdy shoes, the path can be wet and slippery.
Visit the Old Bad Pfäfers (45–60 minutes)
The Old Bad Pfäfers at the entrance to the spring gorge is the oldest preserved baroque bath in Switzerland. In the Museum Kloster Pfäfers you can learn more about the history of the thermal spring and the bathing culture. In the inn you can enjoy regional cuisine right on the edge of the gorge.
- Good to know: Admission to the museum is free of charge, a voluntary contribution is welcome.
- Tip: Combine the visit with a bath in the Tamina Therme in Bad Ragaz.
