Osignano
Hint
Intro
Small and secluded, Osignano impresses visitors with its well-preserved rural architecture. The village at the foot of Monte Tamaro features pretty stone buildings embedded in a lush green landscape.
Osignano at a glance
Osignano is part of Sigirino and is located at the foot of Monte Tamaro on the right-hand side of the Valle del Vedeggio. Its centre consists of partially unrendered stone houses, which are connected by narrow cobblestone alleys. Expansive green spaces and a forested hill in the background surround the remote village.
The compact centre is roughly divided into two areas: while the more modest and rural buildings can be found in the lower part, the more stately houses can be found above on the hillside. Some of these form a long row of white facades, creating Osignano’s characteristic silhouette in a distinguishing feature. Osignano’s spatial richness only truly reveals itself at the heart of its historic centre, however.
Just outside the village stands the chapel of San Rocco, which dates back to the 17th century. To the south, a small, channelled stream flows along the edge of Osignano.
ISOS
ISOS is the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites of national importance. The inventory is maintained by the Federal Office of Culture (FOC) and lists the most significant settlements in Switzerland. Today, some 1,200 places are included in the inventory, from hamlets right through to cities. The inventory provides information on the development and identity of the settlements listed in it, thereby contributing to the preservation of architectural diversity in Switzerland and promoting both sustainable planning and a high-quality Baukultur.
