This is San Bernardino
San Bernardino is located in the southwest of Switzerland in the Misox Valley (Italian: Valle Mesolcina). The town is a popular destination because of the San Bernardino Pass, the moorland and the top sports activities.
Discover San Bernardino
Fresh mountain air, pine forests, moors and a rich flora: It is worth stopping in San Bernardino on the journey from north to south or vice versa. In the holiday resort on Lake Isola, alpine ambience meets Mediterranean lifestyle. Get to know the area on the
Furestin circular hike or on a trip to the Doss moor lake. Above is Alp Pian Doss, known for its local specialties and the Alpine panorama.
Road trip over the San Bernardino Pass
Start your road trip to the San Bernardino Pass in
Chur, the oldest Swiss city. Continue through the Domleschg castle valley and the fantastic route from Thusis to
Splügen with the
Viamala Gorge. Where the motorway disappears into a tunnel in Hinterrhein, you can enjoy the ride on the old pass road, past mystical moorland landscapes to the top of the pass. The scenery with Lago Moesola and Piz Uccello is magnificent. On the other side, the Misox Valley goes down into
Ticino.
Summer and winter sports in San Bernardino
From San Bernardino,
hiking anf
biking routes of all levels of difficulty lead through untouched nature, to lakes and cosy mountain restaurants. In winter, the
cross-country ski trails and
snowshoe trails around the village and Lake Isola are delightful. The Confin ski area is particularly snow-sure thanks to its altitude. San Bernardino is also the perfect starting point for alpine ski tours. And the San Remo sports centre in the village offers tennis courts, mini golf and beach volleyball, as well as a rope park and an ice rink.
Around San Bernardino
The typical pass village of
Splügen is worth a detour. In Mesocco, you will visit the
castle ruins with the Marienkapelle and marvel at the Graffitti zoo in the village. Further down the valley are the pretty village
of Soazza and the top excursion destination
Bellinzona with its
three castles.
