The underground lake of St-Léonard at a glance

The underground lake of St-Léonard is located 30 to 70 meters below the vineyards in Valais. The 300-metre-long, 20-metre-wide and up to 10-metre-deep lake was discovered in 1943 by speleologist Jean-Jacques Pittard. With 6,000 square metres, the lake is Europe's largest natural underground lake.

Guided boat trip through the cave (30 minutes)

You descend to the lake via a metal staircase and board a rowboat for up to 40 people. During the approximately 30-minute ride, you will see rock formations on the ceiling and trout in the water. The multilingual guides will explain the geology and formation of the lake.

• Good to know: A reservation for the visit is strongly recommended.
• Tip: The temperature in the cave is 15 degrees all year round – take a jacket with you.

Didactic area on geology (30 minutes)

Before or after the boat trip, you will visit the didactic area at the entrance. A 3D projection shows legends from ancient times and various exhibitions explain the geological formation of the cave. Three types of rock meet here: Coal slate, marble and water-soluble gypsum, which gave rise to the lake.

Concerts on the Underground Lake

Concerts take place regularly on the lake. The musicians play on their own boat, the visitor boats are grouped a few meters away. The acoustics of the cave give the music a special sound. Before and after the concerts, you can enjoy wine and Valais specialties on the terrace.
