Description

The city of Friedrichshafen, famous for trade fairs and Zeppelins, is inextricably linked with aviation. The Hafenbahnhof station at the harbour is the site of the world’s largest, most important collection on the history of airship travel – thanks to Count Ferdinand Adolf Heinrich August von Zeppelin! He was born in Konstanz and developed Zeppelins, which were first used in civilian aviation and then, unfortunately, also in the First World War. Like a Zeppelin, umpteen e-bikes whir through the area here. However, they don’t travel over but around Germany’s largest inland water.

The stage passes by numerous allotments, first through Eriskircher Ried towards Langenargen. A small nature conservation centre is located in the former station building at Erisried. The area also seems to be popular with birds: Kinglets, hawfinches, blackcaps and goldfinches feel “in fine feather” here. In Langenargen, you reach the famous lake – time for a coffee break. You’re seldom alone here. At least the Moorish-style Montfort Castle, which houses a disco and restaurant today, will never let you down in this regard. The Langenargen cable suspension bridge won’t let you down either. Suspended securely from 130-metre-long cables, it takes you safely across the Argen river. The plans for the technical masterpiece that is Germany’s oldest cable suspension bridge were presented at the 1900 Paris World Fair.

The journey through the fruit-growing region near Kressbronn is fun. There’s even a cosy beer garden, surrounded by campsites. Or how about cooling off in the bay at Nonnenhorn? The municipality’s coat of arms shows a nun dressed in black holding a rosary, and a cornucopia with grapes, pears and apples. The silver poplars on the avenue bow gently in the wind. The moated castle at Wasserburg is best seen from a close distance; it’s now a student hostel.

A 30-person line of bikes is not uncommon by Lake Constance. And neither is a 30-metre-long queue of bikes at the harbour in Lindau. Time for another detour into the town: Its landmarks are the Bavarian lion sculpture and the new lighthouse. There’s always plenty going on in the historic old town; its medieval buildings and winding alleyways give it its own special charm.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
