Schanfigger Höhenweg
Overview
Intro
Leaving the handsome Walser houses of the Fondei valley behind, you now walk up to the Blackter Fürggli. On the trail you enjoy fantastic views across the Schanfigg valley, cross Alpine meadows and find piles of hay on the steep slopes of the Hochwang chain.
Description
This part of the tour begins in Strassberg, the main town of the Fondei. The peaceful mountain valley with its untouched scenery is located away from the hubbub of the popular resorts. In addition to Strassberg with its typical solid- timber construction, the valley also comprises numerous scattered settlements. On the hills of the valley you walk through moorlands and dry meadows extending all the way up to the Mattjisch Horn. The views are best in early summer when the meadows are in full bloom. Walk along a gravel road until you reach Skihaus Casanna. Then comes a steep climb across a meadow and up a path leading to Blackter Fürggli. This passage marks the highest point of the route. Make sure you take a break there: the views back in the direction of the Fondei valley are fantastic.
The path is flat for the most part and continues to Peister Alp, crossing pastures, meadows and little streams. The views range across the valley, surrounded by the panorama of the highest peaks in the Schanfigg. In Zalüenja there is a good place to rest for a bit, with benches and a table. This is where the scenery changes. The pastures make way for soft grass slopes, which have been farmed for centuries by the farmers of the Schanfigg. The hey on the slopes of the Hochwang chain is mowed and dried up to an altitude of 2000 m. Small piles of hey are scattered all across the meadows.
Shortly thereafter you reach the Hochwang ski house. The appealing terrace is the perfect place to end the tour, while admiring the views of the peaks on the opposite side of the valley, including the Weisshorn.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
