Intro

The Schanfigger Höhenweg is a journey through time and a spectacle of nature at the same time. On old mule tracks, the mountain path leads from the holiday resort of Arosa to the Alpine city of Chur. Through the Schanfigg with its picturesque side valleys Sapün and Fondei, you walk across sunny plateaus, explore original Walser settlements and rugged canyons.

Description

The hiking trail leads from Arosa up to Furggaalp. Through larch forests you reach the sunny plateau of Medergen, where you spot the first adorned Walser houses. The descent to Sapün is accompanied by fantastic views across the entire Schanfigg valley, all the way to Chur and part of the Calanda mountain chain.

In Sapün, one of the lesser known side valleys of the Schanfigg, time seems to have stood still. The intact Walser settlements are scattered across the peaceful grass slopes. In addition to the well preserved Alpine and residential buildings there are many loving details to discover and with a bit of luck you might spot some chamois or ibices balancing between the ledges.

Across the Strela, Casanna and Duranna passes you cross from the harsh Alpine landscape to the gentle mountain valley of Fondei. The valley, which has preserved its original character over the centuries, is known for sun-browned Walser houses, moorlands and dry meadows rich in biodiversity.

On the last section begins the most rugged part of the trail. With its steep slopes, deep-cut gorges and roaring mountain streams it offers a magnificent spectacle of nature. The path continues in an easy up and down, hugging the sunny slopes. The descent of 900 altitude meters from Hütta to Maladers is steep, but the amazing views of the surrounding mountain peaks are just reward. In Maladers you can take the post bus to the Alpine city of Chur.
