Le lion, ayant faim, se jette sur l'antilope (The Hungry Lion Attacking an Antelope)
Rousseau made his breakthrough into the Paris Autumn Salon in 1905 with this famous jungle painting. Although he was mocked and derided in the 19th century, the start of the 20th century saw him attaining the status of an admired avant-garde artist. A characteristic feature of Rousseau's painting is the tense interplay between an objective botanic approach and mysterious fantasy. Rousseau only had second-hand knowledge of the exotic regions of the world. His images of animals and plants were taken from magazines and photographs.
