네레이스의 놀이(Play of the Nereids)
한 무리의 행복한 네레이스(Nereids)들이 바다의 바위에서 장난을 치며 놀고 있다. 이들은 그리스 신화에 등장하는 지중해의 님프 들이다. 그 중 몇은 강력한 파도를 타고 묘기처럼 대담하게 바위 위로 자신의 몸을 던지는 반면, 다른 몇은 소용돌이 치는 포말 안에 나른하게 누워 있다. 뵈클린은 등장인물들에게 원초적인 기쁨에 대한 끝없는 열정을 부여했고, 그로테스크함과 속세의 죄악을 피하지도 않았다.
