Birgit Jürgenssen: Rupture
Curated by Gabriele Schor
Co-curator: Natascha Burger
Jürgenssen was one of the outstanding artists who, in the 1970s, began to break down rigid clichés, dismantle cultural constructs, and respond astutely to social discourses through her art. “Be very creative, refuse your role.” was one of her mottos. Having passed away at the age of 54, the artist left behind an incredibly rich body of work that revealed her as a constant thinker and creator.
The retrospective comprises approximately 150 works—some of which have never been seen before. Jürgenssen’s, as she put it, “wild thinking” and her “art from the in-between realm” are not presented in a strictly chronological order; rather, the twelve consecutive exhibition rooms are organized thematically and in interaction with one another to explore Jürgenssen’s heterogeneous body of work.
Curated by Gabriele Schor (founding director of SAMMLUNG VERBUND, Vienna) and co-curated by Natascha Burger (director of the Birgit Jürgenssen Estate, Vienna), the exhibition brings together works from the collection of the founder of Muzeum Susch, Grażyna Kulczyk, the SAMMLUNG VERBUND in Vienna, the Birgit Jürgenssen Estate, and the collections of private lenders.
