Overview

Intro

August 11, 2026, 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Sew a delicate lace apron (“Tablier”), a fashion accessory of the upper class during the Rococo period.

In this workshop, you’ll learn about the history of the apron and begin making your own Bergère-style apron. A variety of fabrics will be available on-site for a tablier de bergère (to match the chapeau de bergère; Monday’s workshop): kits with tulle (cotton tulle from Forster & Rohner, SG), cotton muslin, linen muslin, and silk chiffon (Forster & Rohner, SG), various lace fabrics, lace trims, and ribbons. If you’d like, you can begin embroidering the apron by hand (must be finished at home) or have a simple embroidery motif added using the embroidery machine.

Registration deadline: August 6, 2026 (The course will only be held if at least four people register).

Course fee: CHF 50.00, excluding course materials; these will be provided on-site and paid for in cash (approx. CHF 40.00–50.00)

Instructor: Barbara Wernli

Hosted by: Solothurn Traditional Costume Association

The apron, also known as a “Fürtuch,” originally served a purely practical purpose in the history of clothing and was intended to protect the garment worn underneath from dirt. Since the late 15th century, it has also served as a decorative element in fashion. The way an apron was crafted provided insight into the wearer’s occupation and/or social status.

The apron (French: “tablier”) worn by the upper class during the Rococo period (ca. 1730–1780) was a decorative fashion accessory with a luxurious character. It was made of fine materials such as silk, muslin, or lace and richly embellished with embroidery, lace trim, or ribbons. It was worn as an ornament with symbolic references to domestic or pastoral activities.
