Intro

The Gottéron Gorge near Fribourg/Freiburg is a small but beautiful and idyllic valley between the German-speaking and French-speaking parts of Switzerland. Mighty, often vertically sloping rock walls line the narrow gorge.

The Gottéron Valley's dark side was greatly feared in the Middle Ages for legend had it that a dragon once lived there. It was home to both blacksmiths and millers who settled in the valley a little further away from the city of Fribourg/Freiburg. The remote location was the ideal place for carrying out noisy manual labour or work that required proximity to a river without inconveniencing the neighbourhood.

Those who want to experience the gorge up close can follow a beautiful one-hour route over narrow footbridges and wooden stairs past bubbling springs and mossy tufa rock, the steady torrent of the Gottéron river always in your ears. The path is also a nature trail with around forty trees and shrubs that are labelled with their German, French and Latin names.

More information on the route.

Getting there: From the old town of Fribourg on foot via the Bern bridge in the direction of Gottéron Valley.
