Overzicht
Inleiding
Beschrijving
Davos is the largest mountain holiday, sports and conference resort in the Alps. At 1,560 metres above sea level, this long, thin municipality in the Landwassertal valley is also the highest town in the Alps. After around one kilometre, the route begins climbing uphill on a gravel road and a steep path to Aussererb. The Brückwald woodland offers plenty of impressive views over the Landwassertal valley and the mountain peaks in the distance. Further uphill, it is just under two hours before you reach the Stafelalp, which was made famous by the paintings of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938). The German painter, who moved to Davos in 1917, spent a few summers on its heights, where he liked to come and unwind. At this point, you have already covered almost half the climb in altitude.
Walk towards the Maienfelder Furgga and drink in the amazing panorama there. You will enjoy constant views of the jagged rock formations of the Amselflue, and soon of the mountain pass too. Although the pass may seem within reach, the route now diverts by a considerable distance. It will take around four more hours from this point. When you get to the top, you will also be able to see the mountain peaks around Arosa. The Schiesshorn, reflected in a little lake, is particularly beautiful. This is a good moment to stop for a break.
Make sure to catch your breath in preparation for the descent. There are around 800 metres of elevation to cover and the descent gets steeper from the tree line at the Furggatobel onwards. Once you have crossed the stream, the steep gradient is now behind you. Across the Welschtobelbach stream and the river Plessur, there is now one last climb to the Obersee lake by the railway station in Arosa. Shortly before you arrive, you will also pass the Untersee lake. At this point, you can enjoy a well earned cool-down after such a long hike: either by going for a swim in the bathing area or with a refreshing drink at the restaurant.
