La Jungfrau dans le brouillard

Ferdinand Hodler devoted the last years of his life to the Swiss landscape and, in particular, the Valais Alps and the Bernese Oberland. On several occasions, he stayed at Grindelwald, from where he could gaze on the mythical Jungfrau at his leisure. The mountain emerges majestically out of the fog that rises from the valley; all traces of human presence are erased, so the eye is drawn to the blue-and-white peak which symbolises another world – a spiritual world, perhaps the hereafter.
