Quarry
As a young artist, Paul Klee found that the quarry in Bern's neighbouring commune of Ostermundigen was a fascinating place for his artistic activities. This picture was painted in 1915 during Klee's summer sojourn in Bern. The watercolour shows the rugged walls of the quarry. The steep walls, the contrasts between light and dark, the colour of the sandstone and life in the quarry offered him many different opportunities to focus on various aspects of his creative artistic work.
