Inleiding
The Maienzug is the most important festival in Aarau and takes place on the first Friday in July, though it actually begins with what is known as the “Vorabend.”
Highlights include the parade of schoolchildren through the old town and the grand banquet at Maienzugplatz. The entire old town of Aarau is transformed into a huge festival grounds where thousands of people joyfully celebrate the start of summer vacation. The Maienzug is actually a festival for children and young people, but the entire city of Aarau and the surrounding area looks forward to the celebration every year. This tradition has been celebrated for over 400 years, and to this day, the Maienzug has lost none of its magical appeal. The parade takes place each morning, and at noon, young and old gather for the grand banquet attended by over 3,000 people. It’s a wonderful day for the residents of Aarau and many visitors from near and far.
Parade start: 8:30 a.m., through Aarau’s Old Town
