Inleiding
Stunning glacier landscapes, wonderful views, and a wealth of information about the history of glaciers and how they are formed. The Silvretta Glacier Trail, which opened in 2007, is packed full of great experiences for adults and children alike.
Beschrijving
The hike sets off from Alp Sardasca. You can get there either by on-call bus (see below for the timetable) or on foot. If going on foot, set off from Monbiel car park. The mountain hiking trail leads through Schwendi, Pardenn and the Spärrer Wald wood. Towards the end of the valley, the hiking route follows the Verstanclabach stream, whose source is the glacier of the same name. This mountain stream winds its way through the valley, forming a beautiful flood plain flanked by open forests. In around two hours, you will reach Alp Sardasca.
Once you arrive at the Alp, savour the view back over the open glacial valley. From this point on, the route winds its way along the slope. You will draw closer and closer to the two peaks of Birchenzughöreli and Medjikopf, between which the Silvrettahütte cabin is nestled. The imposing peaks of the Rotflue, Silvrettahorn, Egghorn and Signalhorn tower behind it, making for impressive panoramic views.
The Gletscherlehrpfad starts right outside the cabin and provides fascinating insights into the glacier’s origins, mountaineering and the regional flora and fauna. The educational trail features 15 information boards along the way. The impact of climate change, which has made its mark in recent years, is in striking evidence in this area.
Since its all-time high around 1860 during the Little Ice Age, the Silvretta Glacier has retreated by more than a kilometre. Many little lakes have formed in the moraine landscape left behind by the glacier. Three little lakes where you can go swimming are convenient places to cool down along the way. At 2,500 metres above sea level, you can’t help but stop at the highest point of the hike and marvel at the impressive views of the Silvretta Glacier. The highest point of the glacier, the Silvretta Pass, forms the watershed between the Rhine and the Danube.
At the Silvrettahütte cabin, the Gletscherlehrpfad comes to an end and the cabin trail leads you back to Alp Sardasca.
De sleutel voor een prettige wandeltocht is onder andere een zorgvuldige planning. Win op voorhand inlichtingen in bij de plaatselijke informatiedienst over de toestand van het traject en de weersomstandigheden. Afhankelijk van het seizoen en de weersomstandigheden kan de route gesloten of onderbroken zijn.
