Beschrijving
Along with Murten, Stein am Rhein is considered the best-preserved small medieval town in Switzerland. Splendid city gates and stately half-timbered houses as well as stone houses decorated with bay windows and frescoes characterise the townscape. But be careful: when it is swarming with tourists in the summer or on a nice weekend, inside you scream “get me out of here!”. Soon, the narrow streets are crowded and all you want is space around you. Conclusion: get on your bike and out into the great outdoors.
You cannot really take the ”turbo” out of Thurbo. The railway moves peacefully and gently towards its destination. Once you have rounded the Stammerberg, the two Stammheims follow: Unterstammheim and Oberstammheim. Attractive half-timbered houses and strange geese delight you. From Zurich to Thurgau and back again. The Hochberg is just under 500 metres high. Nevertheless, you can enjoy an excellent view of well-tended vineyards, a slowly flowing Thur and wide, flat “farmlands” here.
It is an attractive ride past rapeseed and wheat fields, apple orchards and pretty villages with interesting buildings. Stately farms, old castles and somewhat newer churches must surely have stories to tell. This cycling stage runs straight under the A1 motorway – without any traffic jams. It also leads straight along an attractive avenue of poplars. The leaves rustle and unique formations of clouds appears high up in the sky.
Things become spectacular and more urban in Oberwinterthur. The classic sounds of the hefty trucks cannot be ignored. This resounds in the ears. There is nothing better than heading into interactive Technorama. You can experiment there yourself. Cycle paths then make it possible to ride through Winterthur in a relaxed manner. In this modern new town with its medieval centre, you enter a city where, not so long ago, mechanical engineering companies held sway. And where there is no shortage of cultural aspects: awaiting your visit are museums, attractive streets with compact rows of houses, and last but not least the “Afro Pentecost Festival”, which has been taking place on Whitsun weekend since 1990.
De sleutel voor een prettige wandeltocht is onder andere een zorgvuldige planning.
