Switzerland's most unique carnival customs

Inleiding

Swiss towns and cities are transformed into a vibrantly coloured festival during carnival time (“Fasnacht”), with each celebrating its own customs and traditions. But they all share one thing in common: enjoyment and high spirits.

The fools’ carnival

Carnival is a special time in Olten. The head fool opens the carnival at the Naareschtopf, giving the go-ahead for the start of its feature-packed programme: a lantern festival, Schnitzelbank evening, fools’ party and lots more besides.

The rowdy carnival

Lucerne Carnival is the biggest annual event in the town’s calendar, during which partying, merriment and enjoyment reign for six days. Wake-Up Time, the Big Bang, Dirty Thursday, United, Brother Fritschi, Guugerbaum, Guilds, Usgüüglete and Monster Corso are just some of the expressions that you will hear again and again during this time.

The noisy carnival

Bellinzona is a carnival stronghold, where it is called “Rabadan”, which means noise in Piedmontese dialect. Each year Bellinzona Carnival attracts more than 150,000 people, who celebrate with fervour on its streets and in its marquees.

The carnival of the absurd

St. Gallen is also held in the grip of carnival fever. An endless number of Guggen play out-of-tune music, while a raft of food stands makes sure that nobody starves or dies of thirst. One of the highlights is the decision about who wins the prize of being the most absurd figure, followed by the popular Schnitzelbänggler songs in various pubs.

The street party carnival

Baden’s carnival has held pride of place in the town’s culture and customs for decades. It features a street party, Schnitzelbank songs and processions – all of which mean there’s a whole lot of action going on in Baden town centre.

The Hawaiian carnival

At carnival time, the town of Solothurn turns into Honolulu – in response to some wit’s claim that the town on the Aare is located right opposite Hawaii on the globe. This idea continues to be upheld. The festival starts with the Chesslete, a procession through the old town by torch-bearers donning white nightshirts and nightcaps.

The turnip carnival

Zug Carnival also pays homage to fools and kicks off with the Chesslete procession. The biggest festival happening is in Baar at the turnip carnival.

The secret tip

Raucous goings-on, colourfully adorned figures and a buzzing atmosphere are the hallmarks of carnival in Chur. It is considered to be a secret tip for seasoned carnival revellers and attracts tens of thousands of people to the town each year.

The Bolzes Carnival

The Bolzes Carnival procession in Fribourg is a tradition dating back many years. Its wagons, groups and out-of-tune Guggenmusik put on a show that attracts numerous spectators to the old town of Fribourg each year. Its zany and outlandish atmosphere is second to none.

The bear carnival

At 11:11 a.m. on 11 November, the Bernese lock away their “carnival bear” in a caged tower to hibernate. It is released in March, when it is wakened from its slumber. This is the cue for masked carnival revellers to take to the streets and parade through Bern’s six kilometres of arcades.

The jazz carnival

Carnival is also celebrated in the city of Zurich in March. Everyone is guaranteed to be in the mood for celebration, with a host of musicians playing Guggemusik, a carnival parade and jazz in the Münsterhof.

The UNESCO-crowned carnival

Basel is turned upside down during the “three best days of the year”, as Basel’s natives call them. 20,000 active carnival-goers make Basel Carnival Switzerland’s biggest, while its uniqueness and quality have earned it recognition by UNESCO as an element of intangible cultural heritage.
