Knitting girl
The living conditions of the rural population in the Bernese Seeland towards the end of the 19th century are reflected in the paintings by the Swiss artist Albert Anker. His portrayals of children and old people in particular are testament to his skill and empathy. Our Girl Knitting is totally engrossed in her work, her profile stands out brightly against the dark background. The school books next to her are a reference to the compulsory schooling for children introduced back then.
