Introdução
Directly overlooking the Lake Schiffenen dam you discover a magical place with religious past. The cave open to visitors today, which measures a total 120 meters in length, was carved out in the rock by two hermits around 1700. Here, visitors find themselves walking over fossils and sandstone dunes from prehistoric times.
A hermit dwelling in the Räsch hamlet was in fact first mentioned as far back as 1448. The dwelling in the cliff was later expanded to its current size by the hermit Johann Dupré and his helper Johann Liecht between the years 1680-1708. To preserve the hermitage from collapsing, in the interest of the public, the Düdingen parish then conducted extensive renovation works in 2005/2006.
The hermitage also houses a geological phenomenon discovered more recently: A wave shaped sandstone floor of fossil dunes that would have arisen in the tertiary sea around 20 million years ago. The location was therefore soon declared worthy of conservation. A unique spot revealing the geologic history of the earth, open to visitors from April to September. Entrance to the Magdalena Hermitage is free of charge.
