Ahmad Al Rayyan thematisiert in seinen Arbeiten Erfahrungen von Zwangsmigration, Exil und Bürokratie. Seine Gemälde entstehen im Siebdruckverfahren aus vielfach überlagerten, geometrischen Mustern, die an arabische Ornamentik erinnern. Bei näherer Betrachtung offenbaren sie individuelle Merkmale von Dokumenten, etwa von Zugfahrkarten – alltägliche Objekte, die Gegensätze wie Freiheit und Einschränkung, Mobilität und Stillstand sichtbar machen. Al Rayyans Werke verweisen auf Erlebnisse als Staatenloser: auf die durch Konflikte erzwungene Vertreibung aus dem Herkunftsland und das anschliessende Aufnahmeverfahren im Schweizer Rechtssystem.
